Number two, learn good conversation starters, and then others will be relieved not to have to start one. These might be topics like, "Did you choose your profession, or did your profession choose you?" or perhaps, "What makes you laugh the most?" Having some good questions ready every time you attend a social event will make you feel more confident, and you'll most likely end up having better conversations. This will also avoid awkward moments, and others will appreciate it because they'll know that talking to you is never embarrassing or awkward. If you want to know my favorite conversation starters, watch this video where I talk about how to get to know someone and what questions to ask. Number three, the most effective way to be instantly more likable is to compliment the other person, even if you've just met them. Most people think more about themselves than others do. That's why they put a lot of effort into their hairstyles, clothes, or the way they dress, but that's not something others notice. So, recognizing something special about someone and complimenting them on it will make them seem instantly more likable. Why? Well, because you'll stand out from the crowd because you noticed something others didn't, which will flatter the other person, and honestly, who doesn't like being complimented? That said, it's best not to comment on body parts or, ideally, aspects that people can't change. Instead, compliment them on what they do or have done; for example, compliment the shoes they chose, or praise them for presenting an argument very eloquently. On the other hand, don't compliment their eye color because it's not something they chose. Honestly, all the successful networkers I know always genuinely compliment the other person when they notice something when they first meet them. Number four, the above also means you need to learn how to accept compliments gracefully. When people receive a compliment, they often don't know how to respond. They try to downplay the compliment by saying, "No way, I got that on sale," or they may respond with, "Do you really think so?" These are all ways to belittle someone who's trying to be nice to you. So, if someone is kind enough to pay you a compliment, you shouldn't belittle, deny, or avoid it. Instead, accept it gracefully. But what does this mean specifically? All you need to do is say thank you and smile. Of course, that's just the basic answer, and there can be many pitfalls and nuances.
