Lee Hyeong-su studied abroad in Seoul as a child, and as he entered adolescence, he began to pick up a brush instead of a book. At the age of 16, he mailed a plum blossom painting to Lee Dang Kim Eun-ho, Korea's last royal painter. This led to his becoming a student, where he studied poetry, calligraphy, and painting. Artist Lee Hyeong-su, who has been practicing literati painting for 60 years, is now exploring new possibilities for contemporary literati painting, transcending time. For the past seven years, he has been painting scenes from Jukdo Market, capturing the human spirit of the common people and their philosophy of life. He skillfully portrays the ordinary subjects of Jukdo Market with a warm and affectionate touch, including the "Deokdae House" selling pig heads, "People Selling Monkfish," "A Woman Sharpening a Knife," and "A Man Selling Tofu." These warmly portrayed images of the market and its people are imbued with the profound humanistic insight of the Donghae people. Donghae people also cite "Donghak" as another important humanistic resource of Pohang. To promote Pohang, the city of Donghak, a city often forgotten, he also organized an interactive performance with children.
