Why American Generals Took German Jeeps — And Wouldn’t Give Them Back

Why American Soldiers Traded Their Jeeps for German Kübelwagens The Jeep was stronger. The Jeep was faster. But American soldiers still wanted the German bucket car. SUMMARY This documentary tells the story of the Volkswagen Type 82 Kübelwagen — the German vehicle American soldiers captured, repaired, traded for, and often refused to give back. On paper, the American Willys MB Jeep was clearly superior. It had 60 horsepower, four-wheel drive, massive production numbers, and unlimited spare parts. The Kübelwagen had only 25 horsepower, two-wheel drive, and looked almost ridiculous beside it. But soldiers do not judge vehicles on paper. In Tunisia, Italy, France, and Germany, American troops discovered that the little German “bucket car” was light, simple, fuel-efficient, easy to repair, comfortable to ride in, and surprisingly good in sand, snow, and rough terrain. In some units, captured Kübelwagens became so desirable that men traded two Jeeps for one. Sometimes three or four for a Schwimmwagen. George Patton eventually ordered captured German vehicles confiscated because they were wasting fuel and clogging roads behind Third Army. His soldiers ignored him. The story begins with Hitler’s promise of a “people’s car,” Ferdinand Porsche’s design, and the factory at KdF-Stadt that was supposed to build Volkswagens for German families. Instead, it built military vehicles — often with forced labor from across occupied Europe. The Kübelwagen was not a clean story. Its engineering was real, but so was the suffering behind its production. At Aberdeen Proving Ground, American engineers tested the Kübelwagen against the Jeep and found uncomfortable truths. The Jeep won on power and towing. But the Kübelwagen won in fuel economy, ride comfort, cold weather starting, ground clearance, sand travel, and ease of maintenance. The official U.S. Army handbook still called it inferior. American soldiers knew better. After the war, the same Volkswagen factory was saved by British Major Ivan Hirst. British and American car executives dismissed the Beetle as worthless. Ford rejected the factory. Then Volkswagen became one of the greatest automobile success stories in history. This is the story of a vehicle born from dictatorship, built through suffering, captured by enemies, loved by soldiers, rejected by experts — and driven into the modern world.
