Death penalty murder trial in Elwood officer's death delayed to next year
The death penalty murder trial for the man charged with killing Elwood Police Ofc. Noah Shahnavaz is now delayed until next year. Carl Boards is currently ruled incompetent to stand trial and undergoing treatment at the state mental hospital in Logansport. He was not at the hearing Friday. "The initial opinion of the doctors in this case, when he went to the state department of mental health, is that he will be restored to competency within a reasonable period of time,” said Madison County Chief Deputy Prosecutor Andrew Hanna. “Nothing has changed from that. He just hasn't been restored yet. So, we continue to march forward from that." The parents of Shahnavaz were in the Madison County courtroom as Judge Andrew Hopper granted the joint motion from the prosecution and defense to vacate the July trial date. Hopper rescheduled the trial for Feb. 24, 2027. https://www.wthr.com/article/news/loc...
