History of Kat O According to the Hong Kong Archaeological Society, artifacts including pottery shards from the Bronze Age (approximately 3,000 years ago, equivalent to the Shang Dynasty) and the Southern Song Dynasty have been discovered on Kat O Island. The 1950s and 1960s were the golden age of Kat O, with a population of over 10,000. Later, many residents moved to urban Hong Kong or overseas (such as the UK and Ireland) for work. In 1983, the Kat O overseas community established the Kat O Association in the UK, followed by Fishermen’s Associations in Scotland and Ireland. Thank you for your support 🙏🏽 By 2006, about 200 households remained, mostly the elderly, as the younger generation moved to the city. Commercial activity is limited to one seafood restaurant and a few local stores; there are no hotels. The only school, Kat O Public School, closed in 2005 due to a lack of students. In September 2018, Super Typhoon Mangkhut devastated the island. The remaining 50 residents faced power and water outages amidst debris and fallen trees. With many elderly residents unable to clear the damage and trash piling up, volunteers stepped in to help when government aid was limited. On September 23, 2021, the Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department (AFCD) and villagers launched the Kat O Heritage Trail to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark. This trail promotes the island’s history, culture, and intangible cultural heritage. The Kat O Geoheritage Centre showcases fossils and traditional Tin Hau festival artifacts. The island's ancient Banyan trees are also listed in the Register of Old and Valuable Trees. Traditions: Da Jiao Festival In October 2006, Kat O held its 24th Da Jiao Festival (a tradition spanning 230 years). Residents raised HK$7 million for a 6-day celebration featuring dragon boats, magic shows, and the island's first-ever fireworks display. Over 7,000 visitors, including government officials and overseas villagers, flocked to the island. Highlights included the "Grand Parade" with land dragon boats, traditional fishing lamp dances, and even a performance by "Dance Alley," a dance school from Kent, UK. Local snacks like steamed rice cakes and mugwort dumplings were sold out instantly.
