Mark 7 | Jesus Confronts the Heart

You can have washed hands and a worshipless heart. Jesus didn’t come to polish our habits—He came to purify our hearts. This chapter isn’t about breaking rules; it’s about breaking through religious façades to find real faith. Summary Mark 7 confronts the illusion of spiritual cleanliness. The Pharisees care more about tradition than transformation, but Jesus turns their logic upside down—what’s inside a person is what defiles them. He then honors the bold faith of a Gentile woman and opens the ears and mouth of a man who couldn’t hear or speak. Through each encounter, Jesus reveals that outward religion without inward surrender is meaningless—and that He responds to those who come in humility and faith. Reflection & Small Group Discussion Questions 1. Why do we often focus more on external behaviors than internal motivations? 2. What’s a “tradition” in your life that might be distracting you from a deeper relationship with Jesus? 3. How do you relate to the idea that behavior doesn’t always change behavior? 4. How do you identify if your church habits are flowing from love or obligation? 5. What does Jesus' interaction with the Gentile woman reveal about the kind of faith He honors? 6. How does her persistence challenge your own faith journey? 7. Jesus healed a man’s speech and hearing—how might He want to open your ears and mouth for His glory today? 8. In what ways might you be spiritually deaf or mute? 9. What are some practical ways to shift your focus from outward appearance to inward transformation? 10. If Jesus isn’t impressed by outward religion, what is He looking for in you?
