Tergooi Podcast #13: Melanoom

In this episode of the Tergooi Podcast, dermatologist Dr. Serge van Ruth discusses melanoma, a form of skin cancer, in detail. "For people who have had a lot of sun exposure, it's wise to monitor their skin for changes in areas so that if something is wrong, we can catch it in time." Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the Netherlands, and the number of skin cancer cases is also increasing rapidly. More than half of all cancer cases in the Netherlands are now skin cancer. There are three main types: basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Melanoma is by far the most dangerous. The sooner you catch it, the better. Dr. Serge van Ruth specializes in dermato-oncology and is intensively involved in everything related to skin cancer. Within this field, he pays special attention to melanoma care. In this interview on the Tergooi Podcast, he discusses melanoma in more detail. What exactly is melanoma? Where does it occur and what does it look like? How do you know you have melanoma and what are the consequences? The treatment process is also discussed in detail. He explains how melanoma care is collaboratively managed at Tergooi. He also highlights the partnership between Tergooi and the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek Hospital. The discussion focuses specifically on immunotherapy: what exactly is it? Finally, he looks into the future of his field. Presented by: Joris Kreugel.
