“DIGITAL SCHIZOPHRENIA,” subtitled “The Crisis of the Spirit in the Age of New Technologies,” is a book by the French philosopher Anne Alombert, published in its original language in 2023 and in Spanish in 2025 by Letra Sudaca Publishers. The digitization of existence has transformed social relationships into mere impulsive behaviors that seek satisfaction without a fixed objective. We are overscheduled and exhausted, but these daily micro-contacts lead nowhere. It is common to hear the idea that we connect less and less with others and more and more with ourselves, although relatively speaking, those with whom we connect are our digital doubles, those bubbles of meaning that algorithms construct for us. Alombert offers a critical perspective on the impact of digital culture on contemporary subjectivity, without falling into technophobia or naive enthusiasm. Explore how the tension between technology's emancipatory potential and its capture by market logic and algorithmic persuasion plays out, and its consequences. Information overload affects us through multiple pathologies, from the attention deficit that mostly affects young people, to the cognitive saturation syndrome that executives often suffer, including hyperconnectivity, technological stress, and infobesity, culminating in the era of post-truth. We live straddling the ideology of technological progress and the reality of the ecological crisis. At the same time that transhumanist discourses herald the overwhelming and exponential progress of artificial intelligence, scientific studies are multiplying that warn about the psychological disorders caused by overexposure to screens or the destruction of attentional capacity due to information overload. This is the schizophrenic reality presented by the advance of the digital world, caught between a world of infinite possibilities and an apocalypse that leads not to the Kingdom of God, but to that of Mark Zuckerberg and his metaverse.
