In March 2001, Ajay Adhiya bought his first brand new car — a Hyundai Accent. Twenty-two years later, it is still in his garage. Still running. Still on its second clutch. Original rear suspension intact. Original mats from 2001 and rubber grommets on the bonnet still holding the strings of garlands he ties every Diwali and Dussehra. He has driven it 2,15,000 kilometres. The Hyundai Accent arrived in India at a time when power steering, air conditioning and power windows at this price point were not guaranteed. It went through Mumbra village's five kilometres of pothole network without bottoming once. It took him across states, cities and highways for over two decades without a single major mechanical failure. This is what a car becomes when someone refuses to treat it as a tool. It becomes a vault of memories. Every drive to Kolhapur for ice cream. Every long highway run in pouring rain. Every difficult road it brought him home from. The Hyundai Accent is not going anywhere.
