jojo siwa & the history of the bad girl rebrand

Email Me: [email protected] Music: Chill - Sakura Hz - Since the rise of female popstars in the 80s with acts like Madonna, the good-girl-gone-bad trope, or has been a repeated phenomenon in pop music. Later emulated by Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears in the 90s, and Rihanna, Miley Cyrus, Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, Billie Eilish and Olivia Rodrigo in the 21st century, the bad girl rebrand has been tried over and over with varying degrees of success. Now with the release of JoJo Siwa's recent single Karma, and all of the cringe, controversy and backlash that came with it, I wanted to explore what makes or breaks the success of rebranding, and figure out why JoJo's attempt seems to have failed. I also talk about the pressure the media puts on child stars like Amanda Bynes, Lindsay Lohan or Justin Bieber, as well as Disney kids like Alyson Stoner, that leads to so much pressure for them to reinvent themselves. Hope you enjoy :) - Timestamps: 00:00 - JoJo Siwa & The Failure of Karma 01:48 - 4 Types of Bad Girl Rebrands 02:54 - Madonna 06:31 - Britney Spears & Christina Aguilera 10:21 - Rihanna 11:42 - Miley Cyrus & Bangerz 17:33 - What Makes A Successful Rebrand? 18:14 - Taylor Swift's Reputation Era 20:22 - Selena Gomez 22:22 - Billie Eilish & Olivia Rodrigo 22:46 - What Makes An Unsuccessful Rebrand? 23:27 - Justin Bieber 24:17 - Authenticity 25:00 - Can JoJo Siwa Recover?
