Shelby Oaks Tries Everything, Delivers Nothing

Shelby Oaks is a bland mishmash of horror tropes and recycled plot devices. While the cinematography is impressive, the performances are serviceable at best and never overcome the script’s structural problems. The narrative piles together cults, demons, found footage, mockumentary segments, possession, and serial-killer mythology without giving any of these elements purpose or cohesion. Characters drift through the story with minimal agency, reacting to convenient clues rather than making meaningful decisions, which flattens tension and undermines the film’s attempts at mystery. The plotting feels mechanical, the tone shifts frequently, and the story relies on contrivances instead of escalating conflict. Strong technical craft can’t compensate for the unfocused writing and uncertain direction, leaving the film feeling more like a collection of borrowed ideas than a confident debut.
