EAST RIDING OF YORKSHIRE PARISH #109: FULL SUTTON Full Sutton is situated approximately 2 miles east of the village of Stamford Bridge in the East Riding of Yorkshire. It’s a small place, consisting of a handful of streets all radiating from one central road -Moor Lane. This wedge shaped parish, one of the East Ridings smallest in terms of size, lies at the end of the Escrick moraine on generally flat land. It has no major rivers, but its crossed by the small Winter Beck which flows westwards across Full Sutton towards the River Derwent. Full Sutton can trace its origins back to at least the 11th century. It was recorded in the Domesday Book simply as “Sudtone” – a name we’re used to by now from other Suttons. Full was added in the 13th century, an Old English term meaning "dirty", corrupted from the word “foul”. For several centuries, the De Alta Ripa family were lords of the manor here, a name that’s been recorded in various ways over time, notably as Dautry, Daltrie, and Dealtry. It’s not your average village this, that’s for sure. Despite its size, it has quite a high population. According to the 2021 UK census, Full Sutton parish had a population of 997 – and a lot of them can be found in one particular corner of the village. Mind you, they are a group of people you would never want to meet. Located at Full Sutton is a high security prison, which in its time has held some of the worst offenders the UK has ever had.
