Is your license about to expire and you want to know how to renew it, where to renew it, and maybe even how much it might cost? I'll explain everything in this video. To renew your license, you can go to the local health authority (ASL), the ACI (Italian Automobile Club), a driving school, or a car registration agency. These are the main options to choose from. Three of these options are virtually equivalent in terms of SERVICE AND COST: ACI (Italian Automobile Club), a driving school, and a car registration agency. If we choose one of the last three options, we'll certainly enjoy a more comprehensive service, shorter waiting times for renewing our license—very important if our license is about to expire—and the option, if we decide to renew our license at a driving school or a vehicle registration agency, to have the new license delivered registered to their offices, allowing us to pick it up at our convenience. Conversely, if our license is mailed to our address, which is typically the case when renewing at the ASL (Local Health Authority) or ACI (Italian Automobile Club) offices, it's crucial for the postman to find someone at home to deliver it, to avoid the inconvenient process of finally getting our license. If we choose to renew our license through the ASL (Local Health Authority), we'll enjoy a slightly less comprehensive service and a slightly longer waiting time for renewing our license. This obviously won't cause any problems if we've booked early, but could cause inconvenience if our license is about to expire. All this, however, comes at a much lower cost than other options, but I'll talk about costs shortly. With each license renewal, you'll be issued a new one. The old one will be thrown away, although I bet more than a few people will keep their old one in a drawer of memories. And it's precisely to be able to print a new license that you'll need a passport photo, with a light background and where you're clearly recognizable. I know that more or less everyone likes having documents with photos that make them look younger and better than they actually are, but we certainly can't bring an old photo from when we were still carefree twenty-somethings, when perhaps we're now well into our 40s. You'll also need to bring your license, of course, along with your identity card if your license has expired at the time of renewal, and your health insurance card or tax code. If renewing at the Local Health Authority (ASL), it is advisable to bring a photocopy of these documents. This is generally not necessary if you choose other renewal options. Finally, you will need two postal payment slips: one for €10.20 to account 9001 and one for €16.00 to account 4028, for a total of €26.20. If you choose to renew your license at a driving school or a car registration agency, they will usually handle the payment process. If you instead contact the Local Health Authority (ASL), we will take care of this. Payment slips can be easily obtained at the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) or directly at post offices. The fixed costs for renewing your license—the ones you'll incur regardless of where you decide to renew—will be €26.20 for the payment slips plus €6.86 for the registered mail with which your new license will be delivered, for a total of €33.06. If you renew your license at the local health authority (ASL), you'll need to add the cost of the medical examination to this figure. However, this cost varies across Italy and could range from around €30 to €50 or slightly more, for a total cost that could range approximately between €65 and €95, including all-inclusive expenses. If you renew your license at the ACI (Italian Automobile Club), a driving school, or a car registration agency, you'll need to add the cost of handling the paperwork, which can range, depending on the case, from around €40 to €60, for a total all-inclusive cost that could range from approximately €100 to €140. The costs just mentioned refer to renewing a category B license, and possibly also an A license. Higher-level licenses generally cost around ten euros or a little more.
