UCD Belfield Buses | June 2023

A video showing some of the bus services at University College Dublin (UCD), recorded in June 2023. University College Dublin (UCD) is located at Belfield, 4km south of Dublin city centre. It is Ireland's largest university, and therefore it should be unsurprising to learn it is a hotspot of bus activity. On its eastern boundary is the Stillorgan Road, where the bus stop at the main gate is served by high frequency routes such as the 46A, 145 and 155. Aircoach also call here with one of their Dublin Airport services. Within the campus, there is a bus interchange which is the terminus for high-frequency route 39A and orbital route 175, and is an intermediate stop for orbital route 17. This interchange is the third one that has been built since the campus opened. The first one lasted until the early-1990s and was located near the Administration Building, close to the centre of the campus, on a road that led straight to the campus main entrance. The second interchange that replaced it was located slightly further south, near the Engineering Block, on a curved road from the main campus entrance. The current interchange started off as the Xpresso terminus in the early-2000s and was used in conjunction with the second one (which served as the all-day terminus for the main bus routes). Around 2012 the second interchange became a lake, and the Xpresso one became the main one for all routes, which is still in use today. This video was recorded before the evening rush took place. A large number of Xpresso / Express routes operate to and from here in the weekday peak, and these will be the subject of a future video - although three of them do make a brief appearance here, and technically the 142 that appears here was not in service. It was on a positioning move to the other terminus with the UCD campus that is only served by the 142. It too will appear in a future video.
