REAL WORLD REVIEW - MASERATI 3200GT.
Today's Back Road Hero is the Maserati 3200GT. A car that wasn't available in North America, it featured a version of the V8 that found its way into the Maserati 4200GT and GranTurismo, the F430, F458, Alfa 8C & Ferrari California. 370bhp, 0-62mph in just 5.1 seconds. Today it represents massive value for money, is incredibly rare, and must surely be the ultimate entry point for anyone seeking a luxury Italian grand tourer, arguably better than a Ferrari 456GT? First seen as a V6 in the 1981 bi-turbo. 05:58 First seen as a V8 in the Maserati Shamal and Quatroporte IV 06:08 Developed into the Ferrari-Maserati F136. A dry sump, normally aspirated, timing chain engine, used in the Maserati 4200GT, Ferrari F430, Ferrari F458, Ferrari California, Alfa Romeo 8C and Maserati GranTurismo. 06:48 Common engine issues. Throttle bodies, throttle position sensor upgrade, oil to use, starter motor access. 08:40 Exhausts corrode. 08:53 Common suspension issues. Suspension 'ERROR' light and possible cures. 09:30 A world first on a production car. LED rear 'boomerang' tail lights. 09:55 Typical body corrosion areas. 10:29 Checks to make on start up. 11:25 Interior walkthrough & switches. The 'Park' button is actually for the park lights and NOT park sensors! (I'm only human after all) 13:05 Beware of cracked suspension arms (wishbones)! This will kill a 3200GT due to the expense of changing them. 13:37 A look at the boot (trunk) space, tool kit and petrol tank location. 14:10 Don't try and fit your manuals in the glove box! Position of the fuel filler and trunk release. 14:55 Driving 15:22 Don't forget to obtain the 'Red' keys as well. They're used to program the other keys for the immobiliser and to bypass the immobiliser if it develops a fault. 16:00 Sport button, what's that then? 17:12 Perfectly usable for you and your 3 friends. Something different for that evening out? 17:40 Adaptive suspension, errors, and costs. 18:10 Let's give it some 'beans'! That glorious cross-plane V8 engine noise. This is a rapid car, even by modern standards. 19:20 Rare as rocking horse poop! Only 4795 made globally, and fewer than 400 currently on the road in the UK! 20:26 You MUST get a full inspection done, especially suspension. Check service history and cambelt service within last 3 years. Timing chain as well if over 67,500 miles. 21:30 Other things to consider. Ball joints, check ASR light flashes green on a test drive, wheel alignment requires shims, air conditioning, instruments and senders. 22:40 Auto or manual, which is best? Do not confuse the auto in a 3200GT with the cambriocorse of the 4200GT. They're completely different animals! 25:00 Adaptive suspension is not 'Skyhook' suspension. 25:50 The 'Sport' button does much more in a GTA (automatic) than a GT (manual). 26:35 Why I would choose the Auto (GTA) rather than the Manual (GT)? 27:10 However for the 4200GT I would choose a manual over the 'Cambriocorse' 'auto'. 27:50 I'd also choose the 3200GTA over the 4200GT. It's lighter, has more torque, and a better power to weight ratio. 29:00 A final drive and thanks. 30:16 Final thoughts. Why this represents such value for money? A timeless, appreciating, classic. 32:34 Summary. Please comment. Have I done the car justice? 33:47 Outro montage.
