This is today's theme in our series addressing farmers' concerns. "I want to succeed in agriculture." "I want to improve further." For those who feel this way, today we will discuss "What exactly is success in agriculture?" Many people envision "success in agriculture." When people hear about success in agriculture, many probably have these images: Increasing scale (from 10 ares to 1 hectare, 2 hectares) Increasing yield (per unit area) Increasing sales (to 10 million, 100 million, 1 billion yen) Of course, these are easy-to-understand indicators. But there is a big pitfall here. The Pitfall: Measuring Success Only Among Competitors The pitfall is: "Setting the standard of success only within the same industry and among fellow farmers in the agricultural sector." "My neighbor bought a big tractor, so I'll buy one too." "They employ a lot of staff, so I'll hire many too." If you use such "vanity" and "social standing" as your standard of success and compete with fellow farmers, you will inevitably reach a point where you think: "What am I working so hard for?" By the time you realize it, you're simply exhausted. This is the danger of measuring success only by peer standards. [Diagram 1: The Trap of Measuring Success by "Peer Standards"] My Standard of "Success" My own standard of success was not success among fellow farmers. "Living a life at the same standard as general society." To be more specific, my definition of "success" was to have a lifestyle, salary, working hours, social status, and retirement benefits similar to those of my classmates who became civil servants, and to spend my retirement years in the same way. This was my standard of "success." What's important is having your own new standard of success. There's no need to blindly pursue expansion or increased sales. What's important is having a firm grasp of your own new standard of success. Instead of comparing yourself to others in the same industry, focus on what kind of life you want to live. Make that your standard. Finally: True success is more important than scale. Finally, here's a message from me. Farming is a very difficult profession, even just in terms of "continuing." That's why, if, after succeeding and continuing your business, you can pass it on to the next generation (family or employees) and create "sustainable and sustainable agriculture" No matter how small the scale, I believe that's the greatest success in agriculture. [Diagram 2: "Sustainable Agriculture" is More Important Than Scale] Summary Don't measure agricultural success by peer standards (vanity/social standing) Develop your own new criteria for success Creating "sustainable and continuous agriculture" is true success, rather than focusing on scale The Nou-Biz Association offers free individual consultations on these topics.
