So, when I was nine years old in 1983, I remember watching an episode of the children’s show Sesame Street on Thanksgiving Day that broke my heart but also helped me deal with future heartbreaks. The character, Mr. Hooper, who owned and ran the general store on Sesame Street, was a fixture on the show for years. Tragically, the actor who portrayed him, Will Lee, passed away suddenly in December of 1982. The show bravely chose to tackle the subject of death, after extensive consultation with child psychologists, head on and produced this amazing episode that is still unmatched by today children’s television programming. Even forty years later I get choked up watching this. Please do not misunderstand: This video is not meant to make you or your fans sad as I intend for you it to help you appreciate the incredible work done by the producers of Sesame and The Children’s Television Workshop to directly address such a difficult subject for children especially.
