Tomorrow's Memory
"What will tomorrow remember about tonight?" Smoke still hanging where the daylight stood... Somebody's laughing three houses down... The grill's still warm... The flags are still dancing... Funny... I remember when we stayed outside longer than the fireworks. The porch light flickers like it always knew, Kids chasing sparks with a sky to run through. Old lawn chairs leaning with stories worn thin, A paper plate full of where we've all been. Neighbors wave from across the street, Some still stop, some never meet. The anthem fades with the evening breeze, Fireflies writing what cameras don't see. Every front yard holds another name, Every driveway remembers the same. The years keep stacking like weathered stone, Yet somehow we feel more alone. The sky keeps speaking in colors and flame... I wonder if we're still hearing the same song. Every firework disappears... Every memory chooses whether it does. Tomorrow's watching everything we leave behind, Every quiet word... every borrowed smile. When the smoke lets go of the night, What survives the light? Will tomorrow call this freedom... Or just another memory fading into blue? Phones glow brighter than porch swings now, Faces lit by a different crowd. The rockets climb with a thunderous sound, Then silence lands back on the ground. An old man watches without saying much, His eyes holding places we cannot touch. A little girl points at the painted sky, Like wonder still knows how to fly. Some celebrate with voices loud, Some stand quietly outside the crowd. Maybe both are searching for the very same thing, A reason the bells still ring. We searched the stars... Asked where forgotten worlds had gone... Maybe they never vanished. Maybe they faded... One porch... One handshake... One conversation... One summer... At a time. Every firework disappears... Every memory chooses whether it does. Tomorrow remembers more than photographs, It remembers who stood together when the colors fell. When the last echo leaves the air, Who will still be there? Freedom isn't only written in yesterday... It's carried by the hands that choose tomorrow. The smoke drifts home with the wind... The neighborhood grows quiet again... Maybe history isn't waiting for another century. Maybe... It's learning our names tonight. Tomorrow... Is already remembering.
