The piece was premiered by Finish harpsichordist Elina Mustonen at Vantaan taidemuseo in Vantaa, Finland on 14 May, 2011. Inspired by climate change, the piece is a hommage to John Cage who loved birds, who wrote 'Empty Words'. Therefore, the left hand of the piece is based on C-A-G-E, and the right hand includes imitation of swallow, cuckoo, nightingale and other birds. The duration of EMPTY CAGE must be 4:33 like one of Cage's most known and most provoking pieces.
