In 2004, director Paul W. S. Anderson finally gave Alien and Predator fans what they had been clamoring for for years: Alien vs. Predator! The first comics, published by Dark Horse Comics, featuring Predators hunting aliens, appeared as early as 1989. However, it would be over 20 years before these two iconic monsters would terrorize the big screen. Alien vs. Predator doesn't have the best reputation; critics hate the film. It goes without saying that a crossover between legendary IPs would be handled completely differently today. These days, cinematic universes are built up by organically developing individual characters in their own films and then bringing them together in a shared crescendo. It's not done as clumsily as in the 2000s, when even Freddy and Jason were allowed to fight. But this style of storytelling, spanning multiple films, had to be developed. Director Paul W. S. Anderson is, in a sense, a pioneer in this regard. In retrospect, this historical context doesn't necessarily make the films better, but in the case of Alien vs. Predator, it doesn't need to. Alien vs. Predator still holds up very well today. The practical and digital special effects have aged gracefully, the portrayal of the two monsters is superior to any previous film, and the sets and set designs feel authentic and enhance the atmosphere. The characters are the weak point: they essentially serve as filler between the action scenes, which, thankfully, are quite effective. The plot has a few logical inconsistencies, but ultimately, Alien vs. Predator is surprisingly and credibly integrated into the overall continuity of the two franchises. I know some of you are probably having a fit, but if I had to choose between the slow-burning original Alien movie and this fast-paced, happy-go-lucky monster romp, I'd always go for the latter.
