As the internet and social media go down, a mysterious advertisement suddenly appears on street billboards and radio broadcasts: "Thank you, Charles Krantz. Thank you for 39 wonderful years, Chuck." But no one knows who Chuck (Tom Hiddleston), the middle-aged man smiling at the camera, really is. High school teacher Marty Anderson (Chiwetel Ejiofor) answers a call from his ex-wife, Felicia Gordon (Karen Gillan). Felicia, a nurse, is exhausted from dealing with people who choose suicide out of despair. After a comforting conversation, Marty hangs up and turns on the TV, only to find all channels down. Suddenly, another "Chuck" advertisement appears. The next morning, Marty hears from his neighbor that a nearby road has collapsed, and he decides not to go to school. He tries to contact Felicia, but his phone displays "Connection lost," so he throws it away and walks towards her town. Even on roads littered with abandoned cars, a scene straight out of a post-apocalyptic saga, Chuck's street advertisements lined the streets. A gentleman Marty encountered along the way remarked about Chuck, "I asked over 20 people, but nobody knew who he was. He might be a symbol of the end of the world." As night fell completely, Marty finally reached his destination. Suddenly, the streetlights went out, plunging the town into darkness, and Chuck's advertisements began to appear in the windows of the houses lining the streets. Terrified, Marty rushed to Felicia's house. While overjoyed to see Marty again, Felicia solemnly told him, "It's almost time. The time has come." Will the world truly end? Who is Charles Krantz, also known as Chuck? Why is he so grateful? What is the meaning of these 39 years? As one mystery after another is unraveled, another story begins—a story that speaks to all troubled souls.
