In a controversial decision, Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s government has given Group 4 and equivalent posts — including Junior Assistant, Office Assistant, and other roles in departments like School Education, Rural Development, Revenue, and Police — to around 31-32 family members of those who died in the tragic Karur stampede during a TVK rally in September 2025. These direct compassionate appointments bypass the regular TNPSC recruitment process that thousands of aspirants prepare for years. While the Madras High Court permitted these appointments as a humanitarian gesture with some conditions, the move has sparked widespread anger. TNPSC Group 4 has very limited vacancies, and every post given outside the merit list directly reduces opportunities for candidates who have cleared prelims, mains, interviews, or are patiently waiting in the recruitment queue. Aspirants invest 2 to 5+ years of their life, huge amounts of money in coaching, and face brutal competition — only to see government jobs being distributed as compensation for a political event. Traditionally, compassionate ground appointments are meant for families of deceased government employees who die in service, not for victims of a public rally. This decision sets a dangerous precedent that could further weaken the merit-based system and open doors for more such demands in the future. Many argue that while the families deserve genuine support — such as financial compensation, education scholarships, skill training, or other assistance — handing over permanent government jobs without going through the examination process is unfair to the lakhs of unemployed youth who rely on TNPSC for a fair chance. This is not just about 32 posts. It’s about the erosion of equality of opportunity and the trust in Tamil Nadu’s recruitment system. Time for the government to reconsider and ensure all future vacancies are filled strictly through transparent TNPSC exams.
