En tren por el Caribe | DW Documental

Saint Kitts has one of the few remaining sugarcane railway lines in the Caribbean. It runs for almost 30 kilometers along the coast. Saint Kitts and Nevis are islands in the northern Antilles and one of the smallest states in the world. It is all the more surprising that Saint Kitts has a railway at all. Local plantation owners built the narrow-gauge railway between 1912 and 1926 to transport sugarcane to the factory in Basseterre. But even in Saint Kitts, Caribbean sugarcane lost out to European sugar beets. Freight traffic was suspended, but it was replaced by the Saint Kitts Scenic Railway. American train owners, who rely primarily on cruise ship passengers, purchased more powerful locomotives, the kind used in Poland to transport sugar beets. These locomotives pulled double-decker cars that offered views of the sea and mountains. The locomotives from the sugarcane era are in poor condition, as is the old factory. The high humidity accelerates the deterioration. Only Hunslet locomotive No. 15 remains operational. The engineer uses it for track maintenance and work on four long bridges, reminiscing about the time when it was the most powerful locomotive in the fleet and could pull numerous wagons full of sugarcane. We follow in the footsteps of the old sugarcane railway and experience railway adventures alongside the workers of the São Cristóbal Scenic Railway. #dwdocumentary #documentary #caribbean DW Documentary brings you information beyond the headlines.
