A História da IGREJA CATÓLICA UCRANIANA - Perseguida por COMUNISTAS e ORTODOXOS!
Ukrainian Cardinal Josyf Slipyj was one of the greatest confessors of the Faith of all time. His life - and that of the entire Ukrainian Catholic Church in the 20th century - was marked by heroic resistance to one of the most infamous persecutions ever seen in the history of Christianity: the alliance between the Russian Orthodox Church and the Soviet Communist Party aimed at extinguishing Eastern Catholicism on the other side of the Iron Curtain. But how and why did the Communists ally themselves with the Orthodox against the Catholics? The Russian Church is an institution entirely separate from the Catholic Church. In the time of the Tsars, they had the last word in religious matters, and spared no effort in persecuting Eastern Christians who maintained their communion with Rome intact. Although a certain tolerance was maintained towards the faithful of the Latin rite, the Russians were much more severe in their treatment of the faithful of the Eastern Rite, who, like them, prayed the Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom but remained united to Rome. The largest of these groups were the Ukrainians, a large part of the Episcopate of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine entering into communion with the Catholic Church in the Union of Brest in 1596. At that time, the Ukrainians were ruled by the Poles, but after the partitions of Poland, the Russians took over much of Ukraine, and persecuted Catholics to such an extent, arresting and exiling priests who refused to submit to the Russian Church - that it was officially EXINTITED in 1875 when its last Eparchy, Chelm, was confiscated by the Russian Church. In the region of Galicia, which was under Austrian rule, Ukrainian Catholicism flourished and took root. After the dissolution of the Austrian Empire, this region came under Polish control and was taken over by the Russians in 1939. After WWII, the Soviets, having consolidated their power in the region, began the most infamous religious persecution ever seen in Christianity: the clergy of the Russian Orthodox Church, which had been persecuted in the early USSR but had received amnesty from Stalin to preach against the German invaders (when it was massively infiltrated by agents of the NKVD, the predecessor of the KGB), demanded the return of the Ukrainians to their domain. The Ukrainian Catholic Archbishop, Josyf Slipyj, was arrested and sent to Siberia, as was most of his Episcopate. In 1946, without any Ukrainian bishops present, the Communist authorities arrested and sent more than 200 priests to the Catholic Cathedral of St. George in Lviv, and forced them to declare that the Union of Brest was annulled. The priests who refused to accept the pseudo-Synod of Lviv (which is still recognized by the Russian Church today) soon suffered the consequences. In 1947, the young Bishop Thedor Romzha was executed on the orders of Nikita Khrushchev, then Secretary of Ukraine. All the churches were confiscated and handed over to the Russians, and in 1949 the Ukrainian Catholic Church officially ceased to exist in its own country, and so it remained until the thaw of the USSR in 1989. A few decades ago, the Ukrainians regained control of their churches, often occupying them and expelling the Orthodox clergy, but the Russian Church wants to regain its dominance in this country. Knowing the history of the Ukrainian Catholic Church is the most effective antidote for Catholics not to be deceived by the appearances of the Russian pseudo-Orthodox Church. If any Catholic expects Russia and its Church to be a bastion of resistance against the modern world, and if he prefers that Ukraine fall under the dominion of Russian tyranny, know that he is spitting on the memory of the martyrs and that, sincerely, it will not be missed if he stops watching this channel. *** SOURCES: ROSSETI, Father Nicholas - East and West in the Church of Christ.
