The Latinas History Tried to Erase

They carried rifles. They used printing presses. And history almost erased every one of them. This is the story of the Mexican and Mexican American women who fought the Mexican Revolution with whatever weapon they had — from the teenage soldadera Valentina Ramírez, who disguised herself as a man and rose to lieutenant, to Teresa and Andrea Villarreal, sisters who founded their own newspapers in Texas and called the working class to rise. It's the story of Jovita Idár, the journalist who stood in the doorway of her own newspaper and refused to let the Texas Rangers shut it down. And Luisa Capetillo, who organized factory workers and went to jail for wearing trousers in public. These women demanded the vote, education, and equality at a time when raising their voices could cost them everything. Some are remembered. Most were forgotten. One vanished from the record entirely.
