The problem is what they got back. Sending Jaylen Brown to the Philadelphia 76ers for Paul George is, to me, a terrible outcome for Boston, and in this video we break down exactly why this deal makes so little sense and why Philly might have just robbed them. Let's start with the logic that was supposed to drive this. The entire reason to move a player like Jaylen Brown after his best season is to stockpile a war chest of draft capital and young talent. So how do you go from that plan to taking back a 35 year old Paul George on one of the worst contracts in the league? This is the part that has me completely puzzled. Paul George is a fine player when healthy, and last season he was productive in stretches, but this is a declining veteran with multiple years and huge money left on a max deal he signed at 34. He does not move the needle for a contender, and he actively works against a rebuild. That is the worst of both worlds. You gave up a top tier talent in his prime, you did not get the picks and young pieces that were the entire point, and now your books are clogged with an albatross that makes you neither good enough to compete nor flexible enough to reset. Boston somehow found a way to be stuck in the mud in both directions at once. Then there is the other side of this, because a deal this lopsided means someone won big, and that someone is Philadelphia.
