True Ghost Story: Could the Past Still Be Burning?

Claire from Alabama lived in two apartments in the same gorgeous old brick complex in Mountain Brook — radiator heat, hardwood floors, the kind of building that holds history in its walls. In the apartment she lived in alone, she started waking up three times a week to a powerful smell of smoke. Strong enough to get her out of bed. She'd check every room, sniff the hallway, the stairwell, her neighbors' doors. Nothing was ever burning. Eventually she read the historical marker out front. The apartments had been built on the grounds of Alabama's first tuberculosis sanatorium, erected around 1910. She doesn't know what they did with the bodies of patients who died unclaimed. She wonders if they burned them. In her first apartment, shared with a roommate, the mystery was acoustic. TV on maximum volume — still barely audible from six feet away. But downstairs in the lobby, or standing right outside their door, it blared crystal clear. The sound simply didn't exist inside the room. Also this episode: a military wife alone in a freshly renovated 120-year-old Victorian base house goes downstairs to do laundry. There's a sealed room in the basement with no door and no window — walled off completely. While loading the washer, she backs up and physically bumps into a small boy in footie pajamas. They look at each other. She picks up her laundry basket and walks upstairs. Then she stops. Goes back down. Every door locked. Every window locked. Her own children all asleep upstairs. Tony, Todd & Carol discuss — and keep coming back to the detail that makes the second story particularly haunting: the footie pajamas. Not old clothing. Not Victorian-era dress. Something recent.
