It would leave over 10,000 dead in its wake, and 13 Royal Navy warships destroyed, including the whole channel squadron just when England was at war with France. Even the monarch, Queen Anne had to flee before its fury. And whilst the Storm of 1987 was actually more powerful, the loss of life was negligible compared to this almost biblical storm 300 years ago.
