Présidentielle en Colombie : la sécurité au cœur du scrutin

As Colombia goes to the polls, security and violence dominate the debates in a country facing a deteriorating security situation, particularly in rural areas. The proliferation of illegal armed groups (which have grown from around twenty in 2019 to nearly 90 today) is largely due to the rise of criminal economies linked to drug trafficking, smuggling networks, and other illicit activities. While Iván Cepeda, the left-wing presidential candidate, advocates for continuing a peace process based on a new social contract for Colombia, in line with the "total peace" promoted by Gustavo Petro, his main opponents argue for a more direct confrontation strategy against the armed groups. In the aftermath of the first round of the presidential election, Juan Carlos Ruiz-Vásquez, PhD in Political Science, graduate of the École Nationale d'Administration (ENA), and professor at the School of International, Political, and Urban Studies at the Universidad del Rosario, analyzes the causes of this security crisis and the responses proposed by the various candidates for the highest office.
