Just days before Christmas 1984, a crime-ridden New York City would become captivated by the hunt for "The Subway Vigilante," who turned out to be Bernard Goetz. Believing he was about to be mugged, he gunned down four black youths aboard a Manhattan subway train -- then disappeared.
