Cybersecurity - Local Government Sector Day - ISACA Vancouver May 2026

In this edition of Local Government Sector Day, we explored key cybersecurity challenges facing municipalities and local government organizations, with a focus on cyber risk management, ransomware recovery, resilience, and practical strategies for protecting critical public services. The webinar featured practical guidance for municipal leaders, administrators, IT teams, and security professionals looking to better understand cybersecurity risk, communicate priorities to decision-makers, and strengthen resilience across their organizations. Session 1: Risk Management Fundamentals Speaker: Anthony Green, President, Green Hat Security Cybersecurity risk management does not need to be overly technical or complicated to be useful. This session introduced the fundamentals of cyber risk for local government, including what cybersecurity risk is, how to identify and assess it, and how to understand the potential impact on municipal services, operations, budgets, and public trust. The session also focused on how to communicate cybersecurity risk in the language of business, helping IT and security leaders explain priorities clearly to council, executives, and department leaders so they can make informed decisions and support practical risk reduction across the organization. Session 2: Ransomware Attacks: A Year Later Speaker: Eric Good, IT Manager, City of Fort St. John One year after a major municipal cyber incident, this session looked back at the realities of ransomware response, recovery, and long-term resilience. The discussion covered what it took to bring critical systems back online, maintain operational integrity, and support community services during a cyber disruption. It also explored the lessons learned after the immediate crisis, including what changed, what gaps became clearer, and how local governments can better prepare for future incidents. This session was designed for municipal IT, security, and leadership teams looking for practical insight into ransomware recovery from a local government perspective. Sponsor: Municipal Finance Authority of BC This Local Government Sector Day was sponsored by the Municipal Finance Authority of BC. In addition to lending and investments, MFABC considers financial education to be the third pillar of its mission. MFABC has sponsored the Vancouver ISACA Chapter’s Local Government Sector Day for several years because of the financial risk impact cybersecurity can have on local government clients, as well as its own technology operations.
