Located in the Yakaköy neighborhood, the city, one of the most important settlements of the Lycian civilization, is undergoing a 12-month excavation under the direction of Prof. Dr. Taner Korkut, a faculty member in the Archaeology Department of Akdeniz University's Faculty of Letters. Korkut told an Anadolu Agency (AA) reporter that surface surveys, which began in the region in 1994, transitioned to excavations in 2005. Korkut stated that the excavations continue uninterrupted under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, emphasizing that Tlos, located in Western Lycia, was among the most important cities of the Lycian civilization, holding three votes. Pointing out that the Santos Valley, mentioned by Homer in the Iliad, lies in front of the city, Korkut said, "The city's history is supposed to date back to the Homeric period in written texts. However, due to a lack of archaeological documentation, it was believed that the Lycian period did not extend beyond the Archaic Age. The Tlos excavation began to change this view starting in 2019."
