I had a viewer reach out with a question about which Bush Hog brand rotary cutter he should purchase for his specific tractor. While the question was brand-specific, the advice in this video applies to all major brands of rotary cutters, including Bush Hog, Land Pride, Frontier, Woods, Rhino, and others. The real secret to choosing the right cutter doesn't start at the dealership—it starts in your toolbox… with a tape measure. 📏 The First and Most Important Step: Measure What You’re Cutting Before you even start comparing models or specs, take a walk out to your field or pasture and measure the diameter of the largest woody material you’ll be cutting. Every rotary cutter on the market is rated by the maximum diameter of material it can handle. If you're only mowing grass and light weeds, a light-duty cutter rated for up to 1" diameter will serve you well—and save you money. On the other hand, if your land has 2", 3", or even 4" sprouts, you’ll need a medium- or heavy-duty cutter. The model I use is rated to cut up to 2" in diameter, but I've seen cutters that can chew through 6" thick saplings—though those are beasts that require big tractors and big horsepower. ⚙️ Match the Cutter to Your Tractor's PTO Horsepower (Not Engine Horsepower) This is where a lot of people go wrong: don’t look at engine horsepower, look at PTO horsepower—that’s what drives your cutter. If a rotary cutter rated for 2" material needs 30 PTO hp, and your tractor has 35 PTO hp, you’re good to go. But if you want to cut 3" brush and the cutter requires 50 PTO hp, and your tractor only has 30, you’re asking for trouble. Always make sure the tractor and cutter are matched in both power and cutting expectations. 📏 Width Matters Too: Cover Your Tracks You’ll want a cutter that’s at least as wide as your tractor’s rear tires. Otherwise, you’ll leave tire tracks through uncut material, making for double passes and less efficient mowing. In the case of the viewer who wrote in, that narrowed the choice to two 6-foot cutters: one rated for 1” material and another rated for 2” material Once you’ve matched material size and horsepower, this step helps fine-tune your selection to the best fit for your land and tractor size. 🪨 Rock Protection Options: Know Your Field If you have rocks, stumps, or debris, you’ll want a cutter that protects both you and your equipment. There are three primary options when it comes to rock protection: No Rock Protection – Best for rock-free areas and mowing high. Rubber Flaps (Deflector Shields) – More affordable, provide some protection, but wear out over time. Chain Guards – Most durable and best airflow for a clean cut, but also the most expensive. Choose based on your field conditions and how long you plan to keep the machine. 🛞 Other Features to Consider Single vs. Dual Tail Wheels I personally prefer a single tail wheel for lower cost and easier maneuverability. Dual tail wheels might give you a more level cut but come at a higher price. Single vs. Dual Gearboxes Available mainly on 7-foot cutters, some models have dual gearboxes. Warranty and Build Quality I don’t put much stock in gearbox differences—failures are rare, and factory defects usually show up early. While worth a glance, don’t overemphasize gearbox warranty. Routine maintenance goes a lot farther than a long warranty on an under-lubricated (or over lubricated) machine. ✅ Final Thoughts The best brush hog for you depends on three key factors: The diameter of material you’re cutting The PTO horsepower your tractor puts out The width needed to match your rear tires With these tools—and a tape measure—you’ll be well-equipped to choose a rotary cutter that meets your needs without overpaying for features you’ll never use.
