Quantum mechanics explains how the universe works at the scale of atoms or subatomic particles. It is also called quantum physics or quantum theory. Quantum mechanics underlies atoms and also explains, for example, why chemistry and biology work the way they do. Even you and I, at least on some level, dance to a quantum tune, so to speak. If you want to explain how electrons move through a computer chip, how photons of light are converted into electrical current in a solar panel or amplified in a laser, or even just how the sun keeps burning, you need to use quantum mechanics.
