The Reading Crisis: Are Bookish People Part of the Problem?
The reading crisis is real, but the data behind it is more complicated than the headlines suggest. Here's what I actually found when I went looking. A few months ago, someone left a comment on my channel saying that book people on social media are the reason they don't want to read. My first instinct was to prove them wrong. So I did the research; the studies, the statistics, the serious writing about the decline of reading in America. What I found was more than I bargained for. In this video, I dig into the actual numbers: why 40% of fourth graders are now scoring below basic on national reading assessments, why 54% of American adults read at or below a sixth-grade level despite a booming book market, and what's actually driving those trends. We talk about what deep reading does to your brain, what we lose when that capacity erodes, and honestly, what BookTube and reading communities are getting right and wrong in all of this. This is not a doom video. It's an honest one. Find me on Instagram and Fable at Topherslibrary 📚 Stay Curious.
