Lake District Walks: Whinfell Beacon, Borrowdale and the River Lune Gorge

Whinfell Beacon is a lesser-known and seldom visited fell lying on the eastern fringe of the Lake District National Park. Its location just southwest of the small town of Tebay, close to the M6 motorway, makes it a highly a accessible location for a mountain hike into a splendid, secluded and peaceful landscape. It's a place where we can easily lose our sense of time and life's immediacy; a walk here is a wonderful antidote to the hustle and bustle of the modern world, it's a place where we can lose ourselves in nature and in the pleasures of living in the moment. In this video, I take you on my hike into Borrowdale, the valley that takes its name from Borrow Beck, the river that runs east through its course, and on an ascent to the top of the highest peak in the valley, Whinfell Beacon. The Beacon, so-named because of its historical connection with medieval fire-beacon communication, is part of a fine ridge of high ground running east-west between the M6 motorway and the A6 roadway and, from its top, there are fine views to be gained south to the Lakeland town of Kendal and north into Low and High Borrowdale and the fells beyond. Borrowdale terminates in the east in the Lune Gorge, a steep and lonely valley that runs north-south from Tebay to Lowgill and in which are located vital UK communications links, the M6 motorway and the West Coast railway line connecting London with the north of England and Scotland. It's place where nature in all it's majestic splendour, grand mountainous scenery, lonely fells and wild woodland, seems to confront the accoutrements of a modern and highly developed country such as Britain. It's a place that engenders thankfulness in the hearts of visitors who leave the noise and commotion of road and rail to head off into a wild and unspoiled patch of Britain: the valley of Borrowdale and the mountain that is Whinfell.
