President Daniel Arap Moi welcomed the Pope in a brief speech. John Paul II then rode in a bullet-proof Mercedes Benz from the airport to the city centre. Controversy surrounding the visit has been aroused by the refusal of a Muslim cleric to take part in the welcome ceremony. Some Muslims have also vowed to boycott his visit. Sheikh Ali Shee, a Muslim imam (priest) who had been due to address the pope at a ceremony Tuesday, said he had pulled out because the Catholic Church's desire "to Christianise the African continent before the year 2000 has been taken as a provocation, a declaration of war."
