VALDECASAS: “A prolonged war in the Middle East would benefit Russia and China and harm the US” Ignacio García Valdecasas, a retired ambassador, explains that although geopolitical tension in the Middle East is high, the market seems calm because it is confident that the United States maintains control, although this will only be confirmed over time. He emphasizes that Iran could not close the Strait of Hormuz without negatively impacting China, its partner, while Russia would benefit from the increase in oil prices, strengthening its war effort in Ukraine. Valdecasas points out that there is no coordinated plan among China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea to bring about the fall of the United States, but rather a series of independent actions. He also states that Russia does not trust the United States due to numerous past betrayals, although there might be some tacit agreement to divide spheres of influence, as in Syria and Ukraine, albeit with mutual distrust. Regarding the war between the United States, Israel, and Iran, he comments that it is still too early to know the true consequences of the attacks, and that the Iranian nuclear program will hardly be halted without a military presence on the ground, although a prolonged war would be disastrous for everyone, especially for the United States, which faces economic and military limitations. With respect to NATO's military spending, Valdecasas criticizes the target of 5% of GDP for defense, pointing out that the United States will not meet this goal and that, without its own European defense industry, this spending will only transfer resources to the American military-industrial complex. He insists on the need for strategic autonomy and a common defense policy in Europe to avoid dependence on the United States or having to ask permission to use its own weaponry.
