Why America REJECTED Germany’s Most POWERFUL Locomotive
Why America REJECTED Germany’s Most POWERFUL Locomotive Subscribe: @legendarylocomotives In 1961, Southern Pacific and Rio Grande Western imported 21 German Krauss-Maffei ML-4000 diesel-hydraulic locomotives rated at 4,000 horsepower, significantly more powerful than any American locomotive at the time. These machines used hydraulic transmissions instead of traditional diesel-electric systems, promising better efficiency and power delivery. However, within seven years, all 21 were scrapped. Rio Grande's units failed in mountain service due to tunnel overheating issues when high-mounted air intakes sucked exhaust from lead units. SP ordered more anyway but faced cardan shaft failures, high-maintenance Maybach engines, and parts availability problems. When EMD released the SD45 in 1965 with 3,600hp from a single engine using proven diesel-electric technology, SP abandoned the German experiment. By February 1968, SP announced the end of their diesel-hydraulic program. Only one survives today: SP 9010, restored by the Pacific Locomotive Association and operational since 2019, proving the technology worked but arrived at the wrong time with incompatible maintenance requirements for American railroading practices.
