Taxila, an ancient city in Gandhara in Pakistan was a centre for Buddhist learning and had the world's first Buddhist university. There are several Buddhist monasteries in Taxila. Historically Taxila has been a city of stone carvers, and it is believed that with the arrival of the Greeks, with their sculpting skills, the FIRST STATUE of Buddha was carved in Gandhara. Prior to that Buddha was represented with an empty throne under the banyan tree; this is said to be the reason why Buddha is in Greek togas. Taxilan and Gandharan monks were instrumental in spreading Buddhism to the East: Korea & Japan, so to them Gandhara is a holy place. Taxila Museum houses Buddha's relics: his teeth & bone fragments that were buried in Dharmarajika Stupa in Taxila by Ashoka to mark the northwest corner of his kingdom. Taxila museum is a treasure of Ghandaran Buddhist art.
