Is It My Fault My Child Has a Speech Delay? A Speech Pathologist Answers

"If only I had read more books..." "If only I had talked more..." "Did I do something wrong?" No, a glass of wine or two while pregnant did not cause a language delay. These are some of the most common worries I hear from parents when their child has delayed speech and language development. In this video, I want to reassure you of something important: 💛 This is not about blame. 💛 This is not about fault. 💛 This is about understanding your child and finding the right support. Speech and language delays can happen for many reasons, including differences in development, hearing difficulties, neurodivergence, genetics, medical factors, and individual learning styles. Most parents are doing the very best they can with the information and support available to them at the time. As a speech pathologist with 18 years of experience, I've worked with hundreds of families, and I can tell you this: guilt rarely helps, but support, knowledge, and early intervention can make a huge difference. If you're worried about your child's communication, you're not a bad parent. In fact, the fact that you're watching this video tells me you care deeply about helping your child. Let's move away from blame and focus on what we can do next. I'm Jules Tush, Speech Pathologist and Director of Grow & Tell Speech & OT, and I'm here to help parents feel informed, supported, and confident. #SpeechDelay #SpeechTherapy #LateTalker #LanguageDelay #ToddlerDevelopment #ChildDevelopment #ParentingSupport #EarlyIntervention #SpeechPathologist #CommunicationSkills
