1993 Lola T93: America Called a British F1 Champion a Rookie. Then He Took Their Title

In 1993, American racing officially classified the reigning Formula One world champion as a rookie. Six months later, Nigel Mansell had taken pole and victory on debut at Surfers Paradise, survived a 180 mph practice crash at Phoenix, come within sixteen laps of winning the Indianapolis 500 at his first attempt, and conquered the 500-mile races at Michigan and the ovals at Milwaukee, New Hampshire, and Nazareth. When he clinched the CART title in September, he became the only driver in history to hold the Formula One World Championship and the American national championship at the same time, a record that still stands. This is the story of the Lola T93/00, the British-built car at the heart of the greatest rookie season American racing has ever seen.
