The key is to practice finger by finger. The easiest finger for beginners to use is the ring finger. It involves a flicking motion where the wrist swings the hand, using the vibrato finger as a pivot point. You don't need to apply much force to the string; your hand should be relaxed, and it's natural for the violin to move slightly. The bow shouldn't bounce; if it does, you're applying too much pressure. The following exercises describe basic vibrato techniques for the violin: Vibrato Techniques for Playing Violin: Vibrato Techniques are useful for: Aiding in articulation, resonance, and pitch projection Enriching the variety, quality, and nuance of the sound Softening and freeing the left hand a) Place fingers 1, 2, 3, and 4 gently on the A string. Slide them from front to back along the string, keeping the frame in your hand. The movement should originate from the wrist. Make sure the knuckle of your first finger is not touching the neck of the violin. b) Practice with each finger in place separately. Support the contact point of each finger with the fingerboard. The fingertip and thumb should be the only two points of contact. With each finger firmly in place and the weight of your wrist, arm, and entire left hand placed on the string, relax your joints so they can move freely along the string's axis. Practice this exercise with a steady, stable, and circular motion, first with your third finger on the A string. Then try this exercise separately with the other fingers on the same string. Next, repeat these steps with each finger on the E, D, and G strings. How to Position Your Fingers in Vibrato Techniques The tricky thing about vibrato techniques is that the two hands do different and complementary work; our minds tend to mirror the movements of our hands. The first thing you should do when studying vibrato is to concentrate solely on the vibrated note, without studying melodies or anything similar. You should start by studying finger by finger; the most complicated (at least for me) is the pinky, but with study and patience, you can achieve things. Well, I think that's all I have to say on the subject. Good luck.
