Spots on the skin, usually located on the face, scalp or trunk. The spots can be single or multiple. Infantile hemangioma is the most common benign tumor in childhood. WHEN DOES IT APPEAR? The lesion is rarely present at birth, but practically all hemangiomas are visible by the end of the first month of life. WHO USUALLY HAS IT? It affects more girls than boys, premature and low-weight newborns, and children whose mothers underwent invasive tests (placental biopsy, amniotic fluid aspiration) during pregnancy. HOW DOES IT DEVELOP? During the first year of life, especially in the first four months, rapid growth in area and volume is observed. From then on, the lesion stops growing and begins a slow and long involution. TREATMENT: The fact that it involutes automatically means that, in most cases, treatment can be limited to simply observing its evolution, without the need for medication or surgery.
