Multilingualism as a School Subject - Soofia Amin
TOPIC: Too often, multilingual children start school at 3-4 years old speaking very well their home language, and finish school at 18, monolingual. Not seeing their languages and cultures valued outside of home / in school, lead many to put aside their languages. In this interview, Soofia Amin, assistant headteacher at Kensington Primary School explains what she does to value her students’ identity, and we’ll be discussing the impact of including multilingualism as part of her students’ curriculum. WHO IS SOOFIA AMIN: Soofia Amin is an Assistant Head Teacher at Kensington Primary, which is part of TTLT academy. She is an Specialist Lead in Education for Multilingualism and has vast experience in supporting multilingual pupils and their families. Soofia has created impact in schools by supporting staff in developing excellent practice for multilingual pupils whilst promoting their first languages as a resource in the classroom and the wider school. Her training has included schools in London and around he UK. Her work was recognised by the EAL Academy in 2020 through the EAL Quality Mark gold award and when winning the Pearson Primary school of the year.
