After the fall of the Western Roman Empire to avoid the incursions of the Lombards first and the Saracens then it fortified and erected around the inhabited nucleus numerous sighting and signaling towers, still visible today. In the Middle Ages it was under the papal state as a Free Municipality. It had considerable importance during the pontificate of the Anagnini Pontiffs, Gregory IX and Boniface VIII.
