Kauaeranga Kauri Trail to The Pinnacles (Coromandel Forest Park)

September 2023, a group of four of us (including one of my sisters) hiked to the Pinnacles and also the Pinnacles Hut, in the Coromandel Forest Park, or Coromandel Range, and in the Kauaeranga Valley. We took the Kauaeranga Kauri Trail on the way up, stayed the night at the hut, then carried on to the Pinnacles themselves in the morning. I have been up there previously (July 2018). Found some sundew carnivorous plants on the way (Drosera spatulata). The Coromandel Peninsula on the North Island of New Zealand extends 85 kilometres north from the western end of the Bay of Plenty. The peninsula is steep and hilly, and is largely covered in temperate rainforest. The Coromandel Range forms a spine for the peninsula, rising to nearly 900 metres. A forest park covers much of the peninsula's interior. It comprises the eroded remnants of the Coromandel Volcanic Zone, which was highly active during the Miocene and Pliocene periods. Volcanic activity has since primarily shifted southeast to the Taupo Volcanic Zone. Geothermal activity is still present on the Peninsula, with hot springs in several places.
