The story of Madonna delle Lacrime, the Weeping Madonna of Siracusa, Sicily

In 1953, a cheap mass produced plaster plaque image of the Blessed Virgin Mary, which was given as a wedding gift to a young couple named Angelo and Antonina Iannuso, wept from August 29- Sept 1. The weeping was witnessed by crowds, who reported miraculous cures, including the healing of Antonina who was suffering from severe toxemia. The story caused a media firestorm which spread across Europe and eventually the world during the 50s and 60s. After an investigation, the local Catholic bishops declared the weeping to be a real event with no natural explanation, and the liquid was found to be composed of human tears. The phenomenon was officially recognized by the Catholic Church in 1954.
