Manor Way Level Crossing
One single and one pair of Class 357s in c2c livery pass the pedestrian crossing just outside Rainham (Greater London). Class 395s in Southeastern livery and Class 373 e300s in the old Eurostar livery pass behind the crossing on HS1, which runs parallel to this line. This crossing is the closest to London on the line to Pitsea, and is one of a few MCB-OC (Manually Controlled Barriers On Call) crossings in the UK. A small traffic-light-crossing-button-unit by the crossing is pressed by my father, and as no trains are approaching, the 'WAIT' de-illuminates and the barriers raise. The crossing lowers after a minute and the lights cease flashing. The signs are pointless, one being the safe height warning people that are 17 foot tall to duck. The other warns of the crossing and says to 'STOP when lights show' 'or when barrier is down'. Unless someone is incredibly thick, they wouldn't try to walk through or over the barrier. This crossing was pedestrianised when HS1 was completed in 2006. Manor Way is in an industrial site and the 300 metres of road the other side of the tracks has turned into a dump; being 3 feet deep in fly tipping rubbish. 10/10, London Borough of Havering! The next station down is at Dagenham, where most level crossing equipment is made. It is said that there is a whole warehouse full of old Halogen lights. Ironically though, the crossing at Dagenham Dock station was closed in 2006, being pedestrianised after HS1 was built. There is one picture of it on geograph.co.uk before it closed. Yay websites.
