Martin Scorsese’s Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore has finally arrived on Criterion Collection 4K Ultra HD, and after experiencing the film for the very first time, I can honestly say it was one of the biggest surprises I’ve had all year. In this spoiler-light review, I share my thoughts on Ellen Burstyn’s Academy Award-winning performance, Martin Scorsese’s remarkably compassionate direction, the outstanding Criterion 4K presentation, and the excellent collection of special features—including the wonderful conversations with Ellen Burstyn and editor Marcia Lucas, as well as the outstanding archival audio commentary. As someone who grew up watching the television series Alice, finally discovering the film that inspired it made this viewing a truly special full-circle experience.
